XCOM 2 lead on performance issues: “We didn’t know it would be this way at launch”

XCOM 2 is all the Master Race wants to talk about at the moment, but an unfortunate percentage of those conversations are about crashes, bugs and performance problems.

Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, lead designer Jake Solomon said Firaxis was blindsided by the issues.

“I can honestly say that we didn’t know it would be this way at launch,” he said.

Solomon said the problems are “not across the board” and “sporadic”, so Firaxis didn’t see them ahead of release.

“Maybe this is damning on me, but I’m sitting here talking to you now on the laptop I use to play it on and I didn’t see these issues,” he said. “We didn’t catch this stuff in compatibility testing.”

Nevertheless, the studio is obviously “fully, fully accountable for the product in people’s hands”, Solomon added, and will “certainly take responsibility for it”.

“I can’t say dates, but I would say that we’re working very furiously. We already have a lot of those issues in our sights,” he promised.

XCOM 2 has attracted rave reviews; Kris called it a triumph. That said, Sherif is well and truly over it. I personally haven’t encountered significant issues while playing, except that it’s bloody hard and I’m awful.
