Black Ops 3 mod tools close to alpha in rare Call of Duty map editor release

Call of Duty rarely fronts a map editor, but the faithful will soon be rewarded for their patience.

Black Ops 3‘s long-promised mod tools are drawing ever closer.

According to Treyarch’s development director, the studio is preparing to launch a closed alpha test for its first map editor since 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War.

Last time we released our map editor was cod:waw. It has changed a lot in 8 years. Modtools closed alpha is right around the corner. #8^B

No word yet on broader release or how to get in on the action, unfortunately. The good news is we’re pretty much on schedule according to the timeline Treyarch supplied when announcing mod support for Black Ops 3.

This news is, of course, of interest mostly to PC players; we don’t expect Activision to pull a Bethesda any time soon.
