Star Wars fans may get a bit weepy over a couple of projects that never saw the light of day.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron developer Factor 5 was involved with a number of projects which sadly never made it to market.
Following on from a 2011 report on the cancelled Rogue Squadron collection for Wii and Rogue Squadron: X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, Unseen64 has details of another couple of Star Wars games lost to those turbulent days.
According to the video above, Factor 5 planned a spin-off to the Rogue Squadron series called Dark Squadron. Similarly to some Imperial bonus missions in the core series, Dark Squadron would put players in the role of Darth Vader, and grant greater tactical command of battles.
The second never-seen-before project is an action adventure game staring Chewbacca, explaining the Wookie’s history prior to his appearance in Star Wars: A new Hope as Han Solo’s best pal.
The video goes into detail on what happened at Factor 5 and LucasArts to scotch these promising Star Wars projects before they were announced, and also has plenty more to say about the cancelled Rogue Squadron collection.
The history of Star Wars games seems to be littered with corpses like these. Lucasfilm is looking into resurrecting Star Wars 1313 and other canned projects, although we’re not holding our breath.
Nowadays, EA has the exclusive rights to Star Wars console games, and is fielding DICE’s Star Wars: Battlefront, Visceral’s story-driven Star Wars game, and Respawn’s third-person Star Wars action game.
