Metroid Prime: Federation Force made a showing during today’s Nintendo Direct.

The title has been controversial as some Nintendo fans are frustrated by the wait for a “real” Metroid game, and have concerns an unrelated title has been shoehorned into the franchise.

Addressing these concerns, Metroid Prime series producer Kensuke Tanabe said that he had always intended for the multiplayer game to be part of the Metroid canon. He began the project because he wanted to explore the story of the conflict between the Galactic Federation and Space Pirates, a story Metroid star Samus Aran isn’t involved in.

Two other snippets came out of the presentation. First, it’s not just an action game; players will customise their builds to take on RPG-like roles as healer, DPS and more. Second, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon developer Next Level Games assisted with production.
