Everyone expected Blizzard to reveal Sombra as the next Overwatch hero. Instead, meet Ana Amari.
According to various sites which were given an early look at the hero, as well as the official webpage, the 22nd character is a support sniper with the ability to heal teammates and damage enemies “by firing at them with her rifle.”
Ana, who is Pharah’s mother, can also cancel an enemy’s ultimate by putting them to sleep, and can also prevent a target from healing temporarily.
Her ultimate provides an ally with a damage and speed boost for a short period. This particular ability can be seen in the gameplay video above from Arekkz.
Here’s more on her abilities:
BIOTIC RIFLE: Ana’s rifle shoots darts that can restore health to her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. She can use the rifle’s scope to zoom in on targets and make highly accurate shots.
SLEEP DART: Fires a dart from her sidearm, rendering an enemy unconscious – though any damage will rouse them.
BIOTIC GRENADE: Tosses a biotic bomb that deals damage to enemies and heals allies in a small area of effect. Affected allies briefly receive increased healing from all sources, while enemies caught in the blast cannot be healed for a few moments.
Ultimate – NANO BOOST: After Ana hits one of her allies with a combat boost, they temporarily move faster, deal more damage, and take less damage from enemies’ attacks.
Sombra was expected to be revealed by Blizzard this month, and it’s still possible the character could be shown during the Comic-Con panel next week. Or it could be Ana. It appears the two are separate though, since Sombra is tied to Mexico and Amari is of Egyptian heritage. Blizzard is consistently exploring new heroes, so we could hear something on Sombra soon – or not. They have their own version of “soon,” as you know.
Ana’s origin video is below and you can try her out on the Overwatch PTR on PC from today.
